City man denies having ganja at Bamia roadblock

Devon Douglas, 27, of 67 Hunter Street, Albouystown pleaded not guilty to having 240 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking when police stopped a minibus at a roadblock at Bamia, Linden/Soesdyke Highway on Sunday.

Douglas appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton on Monday and his attorney Sasha Roberts asked the court to take into consideration that her client was in a minibus which was stopped and searched by police. She said that the marijuana was found in a seat where a woman was previously sitting and her client was placed to sit there by the conductor. Roberts told the court that her client only entered the bus with a water bottle.

Police Prosecutor Shellon Daniels objected to bail stating that no special reason was provided. She said that a search was conducted on a route 43 minibus which was heading to Georgetown.

Douglas, she said, was sitting in the conductor’s seat. The drugs were found in a haversack which Douglas had entered the bus with, Daniels said.

Douglas was remanded to prison and will make his next court appearance at the Christianburg Magistrate’s Court on January 26.
