The coastal area experienced a high spring-tide level last evening and Regions 2, 3, and 6 experienced minimal overtopping, the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported.
In Region 2, Anna Regina and some areas at the south end of the region were affected, Regional Vice Chairman, Vishnu Samaroo told GINA.
He said that sea water flowed into drainage canals but has not affected residential areas. He said that the water was receding.
Regional Chairman of Region 3, Julius Faerber, told GINA that a few areas were affected including Vreed-en-Hoop, Anna Catherina, Vergenoegen and Tuschen. He said that the water flowed into trenches, drains and canals, and receded shortly after.
While on a farmers’ outreach in Linden yesterday, Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud appealed to residents and communities affected to assist in guarding against sea water contaminating freshwater sources. “This is especially pertinent in light of the El Nino weather conditions affecting the country”, GINA said.
In Region 6, work is ongoing in the Manchester and Wellington Park areas to guard against the impact of overtopping.
