Fourteen-year-old charged over $2.9M jewels theft

A 14-year-old boy of Rosignol, West Berbice who allegedly stole $2.9M worth in gold and silver jewellery was on Wednesday refused bail when he appeared at the Blairmont Court before Magistrate Nigel Hawke.

The court heard that between January 27 and 28 the juvenile broke into the jewellery store of Chandrawattie Ram and carted off the items. He was not required to plead to the indictable offence.

Reports are that the child was caught wearing one of the silver chains – the only piece of jewellery that was recovered.

The boy’s grandparents with whom he resides said the child left home on Tuesday and they found him at his sister’s house at Number 11 Village on Thursday.

He is scheduled to return to court on February 22.
