Teen granted bail for wounding charge

A 14-year-old boy was yesterday granted bail in the sum of $25,000 when he appeared at the Fort Wellington Court before Magistrate Nigel Hawke on a charge of unlawful wounding.

The court heard that on February 2, at Number 30 Village, the juvenile unlawfully and maliciously wounded Yashwant Sooknanan, a special constable attached to the Guyana Power & Light (GPL) office at Onverwagt, West Coast Berbice.

The lad pleaded not guilty to the charge and he is scheduled to return to court on March 18 for report.

Attorney James Bond, representing the lad, made a submission for reasonable bail.

He informed the magistrate that his client is a third form student of the Bush Lot Secondary School. He said the boy’s mother is a single parent who has to be out of the country at times to earn a living and as a result the boy is left in the care of his extended family.

The magistrate granted the juvenile his pre-trial freedom after looking at the medical certificate of the victim. Reports are that Sooknanan was riding home after work when a bottle was hurled at him.

He suffered injuries above his left eye and forehead.
