Ministry to conclude rates review for GTI part-time staff by month-end

Following the work stoppage by part-time staffers at the Government Technical Institute last week, the Ministry of Education has said that it expects to conclude a review on the part-time rates of pay and this will be made known to all parties by the end of this month.

Meanwhile, the ministry is calling on the part-time staff of the GTI to resume duties in the interest of the students so they will not be adversely affected by the work stoppage.

The ministry has also undertaken to pursue a total review of part-time staff for all technical institutes and the teachers’ training college to ensure that all teachers are given fair opportunities and compensation for their work, regardless of the institution or post, the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported.

The revamping of the system includes full-time against part-time courses and programmes, teaching hours and full-time staff undertaking part-time teaching, the Education Ministry had said in a release.

The ministry will be carefully appraising various rates and the provision in the education budget to meet any increases and the additional expenditure necessary to meet any of these hikes.

In addition, the per capita training cost for all institutions will be established and the required policy, administrative, technical and academic programme changes effected in consultation with the various Boards of Governors.
