Students injured as bus slams into lamppost

– in bid to avoid other vehicle

Several persons were awaiting treatment at the Georgetown Hospital yesterday afternoon after the bus they were travelling in slammed into a street light pole in a bid to avoid a collision with another vehicle.

Several students were injured when this minibus slammed into the electricity pole at right in a bid to avoid crashing into another vehicle.

According to the conductor of the bus, 18-year-old Kester McKinnon, the Route 44 minibus was travelling to Victoria from Georgetown “levelled” with mostly students on the “line top” when the driver tried to avoid collision with another vehicle which was “coming out of Bakewell Road”.

According to McKinnon, the man in the other vehicle was talking to someone and not paying attention to where he was going. The driver of the minibus tried to avoid the other vehicle, McKinnon said, but was still hit by the vehicle.

The bus in turn hit the light post.

The occupants of the bus sustained mostly minor injuries but were very shaken. Tiffany Nkosi, 16, of Buxton sustained the worse of the injuries. She was crying out for a broken leg and claimed that a piece of glass was lodged in her throat.

Nkosi who was said to be sitting in the front seat of the bus, reportedly started screaming when she realised what was about to happen.

Meanwhile, Okeme Beaton, 13, said that he hit his knee and Malika Azore, 17, of East Ruimveldt was complaining of pain in her left leg.

She was leaning on McKinnon for support. Both Azore and Beaton were sitting behind the conductor.

Keanu Cave, 13, also sustained injuries. He had broken glass stuck in his feet and a swollen ankle.

When Stabroek News visited the scene, the minibus, BGG 1949, was still at the side of the road. A large crowd had gathered and were discussing the incident. The other vehicle, dark blue Surf, PGG 7276, had been moved to the Beterverwagting (BV) Police Station.
