School crumbles
A school in Haiti has collapsed under the weight of a mudslide, killing at least four children.
The northern city of Cap-Haitien was left largely unscathed by last month’s devastating earthquake, but several days of torrential rain triggered the mudslide.
The government began allowing schools outside of areas hard-hit by the earthquake to reopen at the start of February.
New government takes
charge in Anguilla
There’s been a change of government in Anguilla after Monday’s general election.
The Anguilla United Movement of Hubert Hughes won four of the seven seats to the two of the former ruling United Front, whose new leader Victor Banks lost his seat. The Anguilla Progressive Party took the other seat. Officials said there was a high turn-out of voters, with 80% reported in some electoral districts.
France draws up blacklist
The French government has said it will impose heavy taxes on domestic firms that have operations in 18 countries it considers tax havens. French media say France is pushing ahead with its own blacklist of uncooperative offshore financial centres – those which have failed to sign enough international agreements on sharing tax information. It is targeting French firms directly. For example, the tax on dividends, interest and licence fees that flow through the 18 tax centres will be raised from 15 to 50%. The countries on the French list include Anguilla, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines.
Americans held for stripping
Bahamas police say they have charged three American men with violating public nudity laws for allegedly stripping at a Nassau nightclub.
A police statement said the three suspects from Atlanta were arrested during a raid at The Ranch club on Sunday.
Police allege they were illegally stripping late for dozens of female patrons, including a few off-duty police officers.
A police spokesman said detectives were questioning the female officers to see if they had a hand in organising the alleged strip shows.
