Labourer jailed for three years for ganja possession

Keshan Persaud, 22, who appeared at the Blairmont Court on Wednesday was found on February 15 with 13 grammes of cannabis sativa in his pants pocket. Police were at the time conducting a search at Number Four Settlement when he was caught.

Persaud who told the magistrate that he used the marijuana for a cold said he was sorry for his actions. He was also ordered to pay a fine of $25,000.

On that same day the police had searched the home of a suspected drug lord and intercepted a fibreglass boat and an engine that was reportedly used to transport illegal drugs from the Berbice River.

The man’s wife had been taken into custody but has since been released on station bail. The drug lord has reportedly gone into hiding.
