Mainstay man shot trying to rescue father from bandits

Police on the Essequibo Coast are investigating a robbery which occurred around 9 pm at Mainstay on Monday evening during which a farmer and his family were attacked and robbed by three men armed with handguns.

According to the police, Sew Vishnu Seecharran along with his wife, his son Vashishtha and the latter’s wife were at home when they were attacked and robbed by the armed men who entered the home through an open door.

The men demanded cash and jewellery, assaulting the farmer and his son in the process.

The man’s son later sustained a gunshot wound to his shoulder following an attempt to assist his father during the ordeal in which the family was relieved of some $200,000 in cash and a mobile phone.

A relative of the Seecharrans told Stabroek News yesterday by telephone that Vashishtha Seecharran, who according to the police was admitted to the Suddie hospital along with his father following the 5-minute ordeal, was in a stable condition at the medical institution.

He said the man’s father was discharged from the hospital sometime last evening and according to him, while no arrests have been made in connection with the incident, police officers from the Anna Regina Police station visited the family at their Mainstay Public Road home to conduct further investigations into the incident.
