Bartica woman caught with ganja escaped police station

-court hears

A young woman was yesterday charged with escaping from the Bartica Police Station, shortly after she had been held for allegedly being in possession of marijuana.

Tetrina Stevens, 18, of Bartica pleaded not guilty to the charge of escape from lawful custody when she appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson subsequently remanded Stevens.

Stevens denied that on February 24, 2010, being in custody following an arrest as a result of the possession of marijuana, she escaped.

She was represented by attorney Mohamed Zafar, who applied for reasonable bail for her on the grounds that she will return to court when required to. He stated that his client’s mother was the one who had taken her back to the police station shortly after she escaped.

However, Prosecutor Stephen Telford objected to the bail application on the grounds that Stevens’ mother did not take her to the police station right after she had escaped; several days had elapsed before she took her back to the station.

The matter was transferred to the Bartica Magistrates’ Court for March 24.
