Woman hospitalised after cutlass attack by former husband

A mother of five is now hospitalised after she was brutally attacked by her former common-law husband yesterday morning while on her way to work.

Forty-one year-old Roxanne Goodman, of Parfait Harmonie, was reportedly attacked by the man at about 9 am in Barr Street, Kitty a short distance from her work place.  Relatives told this newspaper that the man approached Goodman and started to chop her about her body.  She was chopped her in her hand, hand and stabbed her in the back. She also was badly bruised as she fell while trying to defend herself. Her attacker reportedly fled when a man in the area responded to the woman’s cries for help and intervened.

Relatives told Stabroek News that Goodman and her attacker were together for over 20 years but they have been separated for about 14 months now.  They said that their relationship had been a turbulent one, which had been characterised by several abusive acts by the man. According to them, several reports had been lodged against the man in the past in relation to abusive acts.

According to the family members, Goodman and the man had met up at the bus park on Thursday evening, where the man in a drunken state threw rum on the woman and threatened to harm her.  They said that on several occasions the man had declared his intention to kill Goodman.

The woman is now a patient in the Georgetown Public Hospital.
