Armed robbery accused rants at magistrate over court date

A robbery under arms accused was on Tuesday removed from the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court after he verbally abused Magistrate Faith McGusty.

Andre Crandon appeared before the magistrate charged with robbery under arms committed on October 19, 2009 at Richmond, Essequibo.
The unrepresented Crandon, who was charged along with others, complained to the magistrate that every court day he was present but the other prisoners were not there.

Prosecutor Sergeant Wahid admitted to the magistrate that there have been difficulties getting the prisoners to court and promised that he will make every effort as soon as possible to make contact with the police in Berbice to have the other accused present on the next court date, which the magistrate set for May 4.

Crandon then pleaded with the magistrate for a different day, explaining that he had another case on that date at Court Five in Georgetown. As the magistrate was about to give him a later date, Crandon began shouting at a police officer and Magistrate McGusty consequently decided to leave the date unchanged. Upon hearing this, Crandon directed his abuse towards the magistrate and also used indecent language. He then removed from the court and taken downstairs to the Anna Regina Police Station where he could be heard continuing to rant. Police said this was not the first time he has behaved in this manner.
