An ‘adventure’ on wheels

One man’s trash, Australian engineer Christopher Clash knows, can be another man’s treasure.

Christopher Clash’s (inset) “Adventure Bug” has taken him and his wife across the world for three years. The couple has been in places such as Afghanistan and Gobi Mongolia. They have spent two weeks in Guyana entering the country from Brazil and will be moving on to Suriname sometime next week. (Tiffny Rhodius photo)

After Clash took into consideration the cost of a new car, including accessories that are often unnecessary, he took to his designing board.  After scavenging for parts that were tossed out as rubbish, Clash built the “Adventure Bug.” The two-wheel drive exoskeleton car weighs 1,360 kilograms and uses 7.5 litres of oil per every 100 kilometres. The vehicle runs on coconut, canola, vegetable, fish and chip oil and cost AUS$5,000 to make.

After making the car, Clash and his wife decided to travel the world and in the process raise money for the Epilepsy and Cancer for Kids Foundation, a local charity in Australia. It has been three years now since the couple has been travelling in the bug and they have visited 53 countries.

Travelling to Guyana through Brazil, the couple covered 130,000 kilometres. They have been here two weeks and will be leaving for Suriname next week.

According to Clash, he and his wife are trying to circumnavigate as much of the world and the continents as they can. They plan to travel for five years.

However, Clash pointed out that he hopes his story will inspire children here to create. “If you have the skills, you can make things,” he said. Further he added that he wanted to encourage young people to be ambassadors of their country, which he says is the most important thing.

The car is equipped with a tent on the roof where the couple camp out on stops. It is decorated with stickers from all the countries visited thus far including from Guyana.
