A routine trip to the market yesterday ended in tragedy for a housewife when the vehicle she was in lost control and crashed into a culvert at the Diamond Housing Scheme.
Dead is Cheryl David, 58, of 1622 David Street, Diamond New Scheme. David was seated in the front seat of motor car PJJ 8798, while another woman was in the back seat when the driver, who was reportedly speeding, lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the concrete structure.
The accident occurred on the main access road of the scheme in the vicinity of the Diamond Secondary School. According to police, it occurred at 6.15 am.
David, along with the other passenger, whose name was given as Sharda Samsudeen, was rushed to the nearby Diamond Diagnostic Centre where David was pronounced dead on arrival. Samsudeen was treated for minor injuries, Stabroek News was told, and sent home.
Meanwhile, reports from persons in the area are that the car spun some ten times before crashing. One resident said he heard that the driver was “fixing he music” just before the crash occurred. The driver is in police custody and may appear in court charged with causing death by dangerous driving tomorrow.
David leaves to mourn her husband of 34 years, Philip David, and five sons. When Stabroek News visited David’s home her family was in shock at the loss. Her fourth son, Leon, described his mother as quiet person who was very loving, while her husband said she was a very simple person. She was also said to be a friendly person in the neighbourhood.
David had left home to go to the Stabroek Market to do her usual Saturday shopping. (Tiffny Rhodius)
