Empty bottles thief spared jail sentence

“Is the demon tempt meh,” said Mohan Ramkissoon when he appeared in Court One yesterday to answer a charge of simple larceny at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Ramkissoon pleaded guilty to stealing two cases of empty bottles valued at $10,000 from Suesattie Amin on March 25.

Ramkissoon, a labourer, who has no fixed place of abode, told the court that he saw the bottles in the yard and was in the process of taking them when a guard saw him. He then returned the bottles.

He said he was released from prison in May 2009 and pleaded for a chance to change his ways. He said three months imprisonment was good enough time for him to change his ways and he vowed never to set foot in court again.

However, he was sentenced to manual labour and tasked with cleaning the environs of the court compound for a week beginning yesterday.

He was also placed on a two-year bond and warned that should he break it, he would be sent to jail.
