-several charged

Most of the persons held during joint services raids in several parts of the city last week have been released while the others were charged with various offences and passed through the courts.

Around 50 persons were held when the joint services swooped on East Ruimveldt, Campbellville Housing Scheme, Leopold Street and Stabroek Market Square during pre dawn raids that were conducted during a two-day period.

The operations commenced around 5 am last Tuesday and Thursday and targeted select households to find wanted persons, illegal firearms and narcotics. One of the Guyana Defence Force’s (GDF) helicopters was also involved.

On the first day, twenty-one persons including a female were arrested.

Areas in Linden, Berbice and Bartica were also targeted. There were roadblock exercises and searches of buildings were also conducted.

While some narcotics were unearthed, no wanted men or weapons were found.
