‘Jassy’ sentenced to 13 years for outhouse killing

Justice Winston Patterson imposed the sentence on Bailey, who was found guilty of killing Hilda Nicholson in an outhouse at Rosignol in 2006.

A 12-member jury submitted their verdict last month, but sentencing was postponed, pending a probation report.

Probation and Welfare Officer Ann Choy said he was described by other acquaintances at West Coast of Berbice and Linden as a quiet and unassuming person, who was a model student in his younger days. “There is a definite turmoil-filled and confused person hidden. It is safe to venture that indeed childhood experiences do form us and also help to determine who we eventually become with relation to our disposition and interactions with other people. Bailey has to battle internally to rid himself of old hurts.

He has never sought the help he needed,” Choy concluded.

Bailey had been in a relationship with Nicholson’s cousin, Lavern Albert, at whose home the killing occurred. Bailey attacked Nicholson when she went to use the outhouse at Albert’s home, stabbing her.

Justice Patterson described the crime as senseless and called the convict a coward, who waited in a latrine to attack his prey. He noted that his victim was not the woman who treated him like a “bumper ball,” but an innocent woman.

The state’s case was presented by Dionne McCammon, while Bailey was represented by Michael Baird.
