National Museum hosts Velha Goa photographic exhibition

An exhibition, which seeks to capture the richness and grandeur of the culture of Velha Goa through the photographs of Benoy K. Behl, was opened yesterday at the National Museum.

Culture Minister Dr Frank Anthony, in his opening remarks, said that the exhibition is another way in which Guyanese can have a window into the rich history of “Old Goa.”  He said that he is sure that the viewing public will thoroughly enjoy what it sees. He noted the relationship that Guyana has with India and said that it has grown over the years.  This collaboration, according to Anthony will strengthen the bonds and the bilateral relationship between the countries.

Velha Goa or “Old Goa” was the capital city of India, during the years of Portuguese rule. The Portuguese built many churches, some of which still remain and act as a link to the past.

Behl, is a renowned photographer, art historian, author and filmmaker.  He is known for his pioneering low-light photography of ancient paintings which captures their true and luminous colours.  His works have been exhibited in 24 countries, including China, Japan, Russia, among others.  Velha Goa is one of his major photographic works.

The exhibition is being held under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, the National Museum and the Indian High Commission to Guyana. It will be held at the Museum until April 27 and it is open to the public.
