Navin Chandarpal should be the PPP presidential candidate

Dear Editor,
There have been many commentaries and letters about who should be the next presidential candidate for the PPP. This nation has suffered too many lost years, and our development has been put on hold for much too long. Comrade Navin Chandarpal should be the next PPP presidential candidate for the upcoming general election in 2011; he has led his party to many victories inside and outside Freedom House, and he represents the hope and future of the Guyanese nation.

Under his mandate, I sense that the victory will be used to advance the cause of social and economic progress for every single Guyanese. I believe firmly that if elected, Comrade Navin and his new-look administration should be given time and space to prove his promises. I feel too that he will be seized with the urgency that the crucial issues of transparency, even-handedness, all-embracing democratic development and good efficient governance which is lacking at the moment.

These vital national issues can only be attended to in an environment of peace and respect for law and order, and the recognition of the role and procedures of our national institutions.

Comrade Navin having never ever developed social pretensions or inferiority complexes, uses his education and training from Dr Cheddi Jagan to sharpen his understanding of human exploitation and its many manifestations.

He created for himself his own strategies for representing the poor and the working class, which is why he became the Principal of GAWU College.

He became truly both a working-class intellectual and an agitator. He is, after all, from a  poor family.

He and his wife Indra experienced the pain and suffering of the Burnham regime over a long period of time. He served the PPP for as long as I can remember, but later became disillusioned with certain comrades, because, as I see it, they demonstrated a failure to be a militant instrument to fight for the rights of those who risk their lives for democracy. His outspoken, yet gentle nature is an asset, particularly against corruption.

He also stood as a motivator in trying times, giving hope when all seemed dim. No one can dispute that Navin and his wife made an enormous contribution to Guyana. He was the architect of the UG PYO group movement and for many he is the best choice.

I remember while on the political platform with Comrade Navin we were laughed at and scorned by some opportunists; today those individuals have high positions in the government. I believe Comrade Navin deserves to be the next presidential candidate.

Yours faithfully,
Mohamed Khan
