Shot taxi driver succumbs

Shawn Dummett, 37 of Lamaha Gardens, died around 6.15 am in the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Hospital, where he had been a patient since the April 13 incident.

One of his sisters told Stabroek News yesterday that they were told that his blood pressure went up and he started vomiting on Friday night. She said that the doctors did all they could for him but he eventually died.

From all accounts, Dummett, who operates from Camp Street, picked up the men at an unknown location and while driving along Princes Street around 2.30 pm, the vehicle, PLL 3474 stopped suddenly. Dummett was then seen running from it with the two men, one of whom was discharging rounds, in hot pursuit. The man collapsed in a nearby yard after being wounded, twice in the chest and once in the abdomen. He was then kicked by one of the men while the other was discharging rounds, none of which hit Dummett. The man was unsuccessful in defending himself with a knife that was later found in his possession.

During the ordeal, one of the men was overheard saying “Ya s…t got to f…ing dead.” When residents started peeping out, the men fled through the nearby South Alley which connects to Norton Street.

One witness said that he initially thought that the men were plain clothes police ranks because of the weapon being used and their tidy attire, but he soon realised what was happening when Dummett began hollering for ‘thief.’

At the time of the incident, the man was wearing gold jewellery but this was not taken by the men during the attack. Dummett’s car, which was left abandoned on Princes Street, was later lodged at the East La Penitence Police Station.

Residents later rushed the wounded man to the hospital where he was taken to the operating theatre for emergency surgery. He was later admitted to the ICU and hooked up to a life support machine.

At the hospital, relatives had said that they were clueless as to what had sparked the incident but suspected that robbery was the motive. During the ten years that Dummett had been working as a taxi driver he had never been robbed.

Police are still looking for the two men involved in the shooting and are continuing investigations.

Dummett leaves to mourn his wife Amanda, his mother Miggnet Dummett and four siblings.
