Floods hit Jamaica

Jamaicans may have prayed for rain after a prolonged drought but they are getting more than they bargained for.

Heavy rain over the last few days has washed out roadways and caused landslides in eastern Jamaica.

In the parish of Portland – one of six affected – roadway collapses cut off several areas from the rest of the island and left residents stranded.

Hundreds bid farewell to cigar legend

Hundreds of friends and relatives have bid farewell to the godfather of Cuban tobacco, who was buried Sunday in a casket adorned with a half-smoked cigar bearing his name and a yellow tobacco flower. Cuba’s most famous cigar maker, Alejandro Robaina, died a day earlier at the age of 91.

Mr Robaina, who was the only person to have a brand of Cuban cigars named after him, had been a roving ambassador for the country’s state-run cigar industry.

But more typically, he could be found on his small farm in western Cuba, tending his beloved tobacco plants.
