Diamond man accused of vandalizing auto dealer’s vehicles

Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday placed a father of two on bail in the sum of $70,000 when he appeared before her at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court accused of vandalizing two vehicles belonging to an auto dealer.

Mark Rogers of Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge of malicious damage to property.

He denied that on March 23, he unlawfully and maliciously caused $150,000 in damage to two vehicles, the property of Danacharran Singh.

His lawyer Roger Yearwood applied for reasonable bail for him on the grounds that his client had an agreement with Singh and his brother who are auto dealers.

He said his client had made a down payment of $1.5 million almost seven months ago for a vehicle and still he has not received the vehicle.

He said that some time after making the down payment his client had asked for his money back but was told by one of the brothers that the other was not in the country so he could not be refunded his money. Yearwood said the alleged vandalism was actually scratches on the vehicles which did not amount to $150,000 as stated in the charge.

He also said that his client presented no risk of flight and the allegations are used as a means of throwing his client off the true issue.

The magistrate then transferred the case to Court Two for May 28.
