In his address at the commissioning ceremony for the primary school on Monday, Jagdeo said classes would have resumed much earlier if Guyana had been more financially sound when the school became dilapidated and was forced to close.

According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release he said, “…if we had enough money all of our children would have the best facilities in the world because they deserve it and we need to make sure that they have a better life than we had.” The President also said government has an aggressive programme in the education sector as it aims to achieve “a steep growth in educational facilities and quality.”

GINA said during his last visit to the Island the President had also committed to extending the Essequibo Islands Secondary School and at Monday’s meeting he said works on this project are set to start by August.

The primary school was founded in November 1925 by a Canadian Missionary and was handed over to the government in 1963.
