A 17-year-old boy was sentenced to three years imprisonment after he admitted to Magistrate Nigel Hawke at the Fort Wellington Court on Thursday that he robbed another youth at knife-point.
Reports are that around 8 pm on May 8, the lad, Leyland Anthony Massiah of Rosignol, West Berbice robbed Nazim Javid Ally, 18, of a cellular phone valued $25,000, a silver chain worth $8,000 and $8,000 cash along with other articles totaling $51,000.
The court heard that Ally, a carpenter of Cotton Tree was in a shop at Carriage Road, Rosignol when the defendant along with an accomplice placed a knife to his head and relieved him of the articles.
He then made good his escape. A report was made to the police and the defendant was subsequently arrested. Police Prosecutor, Inspector Donna Grant-Fraser informed the magistrate that the articles have not been recovered.
The lad also refused to give the name or divulge any information regarding his accomplice.
He begged the magistrate to be lenient and requested that he be given “some time to pay back for the articles.”
Before sentencing him, Magistrate Hawke reprimanded him about his actions.
He told him that he could have done better with his life at his age and that he was a menace to society.
