Dear Editor,
The messages from the cleanly conducted Trinidad and Tobago elections are simple and straightforward.
First, it is that, in a real and mature democracy, suspected corrupt practices by government are condoned for only so long; and that arrogant leaders who lose touch with the aggrieved masses and who scorn them, are shown the door, despite the numbers.
In addition, there is a message for those who challenge rulers. It is that they can and – do – triumph against the odds. But only if their affairs are in order, and conduct above board. Incumbents might be tempted to expose and blackmail, but will fail if the closet is empty and clean. Further, those who put in honest time and effort can rise to answer the call of the people and serve. Serve not master.
It is hoped that all who hold power in Guyana, as well as those who aspire to power will pause for a moment and reflect on the Trinidad development.
