Was there no more structured way of dismantling the old New Amsterdam hospital?

Dear Editor,
It is a great pity that when the old New Amsterdam Public Hospital’s destruction is almost complete, then one can be officially informed of the government position. While one would agree with Dr Bheri Ramsarran’s comments on the age and cost of repairs, he is ignoring the fact that his ministry’s actions are similar to Nero who fiddled while Rome was being burned.

Could there not have been a more structured way of dismantling the building? Why was it not advertised for sale and removal? It would have realized a few dollars in the state coffers. When the Ministry of Health buildings in Brickdam were burnt, Dr Ramsammy spoke of the destruction of the architectural heritage.

I would like to remind him that the old hospital in Berbice is of a similar status.

Dr Ramsarran last week at a meeting with the media, stated that people should stop focusing on the old hospital and start focusing on the new gem (the new hospital). In closing, I would like to inform Dr Ramsarran the “gem” now requires patients to bring along their own bed sheets, pillows, etc. This “gem” he talked about at the recent press conference with the Berbice media surely needs polishing.

Yours faithfully,
Flavio Da Silva
