Mosquito repellent factory bond goes up in smoke

A bond of the Roma Manufacturing Company went up in flames on Friday; the conflagration said to have been caused by the friction of sparking electrical wires.

What is left of the Roma Manufacturing Company after an afternoon fire gutted the building on Friday.

The Roma Manufacturing Company is located at 33 Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara. Reports are that the fire started around 2 pm. When Stabroek News arrived on the scene some time after 3 pm fire fighters were still hosing down the building.

Fire service officials on the scene and the owner were reluctant to speak. But reports said the top flat of the two-storey bond was completely destroyed. The building was said to be some 60 years old.

Workers were said to be packing Fish mosquito spray when electric wires were seen sparking. A fire subsequently broke out.

Workers tried to put the fire out but could not and had to abandon the cause. The fire, reports said, also destroyed a container which was already packed for export.

The Roma Manufacturing Company also produces Fish brand mosquito coils.
