(Trinidad Guardian) Camille Robinson-Regis, Glenda Morean and other politically-appointed diplomats are to be replaced “shortly,” well-placed government sources confirmed on Monday night.
Career diplomats are likely to be retained, while the Kamla Persad-Bissessar administration would move to set up a mission in Beijing, China. There would also be a critical review of all diplomatic missions, and, in that respect, the postings in Costa Rica and Uganda might be reconsidered. “All politically-appointed diplomats would be recalled,” said an informed source. He added that “some representatives have already sent in their resignations.”
He declined to identify those diplomats. The government’s foreign policy would be tied to trade and to cultural relations, it was explained. With that in mind, the low-lying mission in South Africa would be retained, it was explained. “The government’s aim is to boost the balance of trade.”
Missions in Nigeria and India would be strengthened, it was revealed. The government is also likely to alter the physical outlook of several missions “to have them better reflect the multiculturalism of Trinidad and Tobago,” the source further said.
Robinson-Regis is High Commissioner to India, and Morean, Ambassador to Washington, a former government ministers.
Contacted on the issue on Monday night, Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Suruj Rambachan declined comment, saying he was studying a brief that was prepared for him.
