Laverne Brummell, the mother who was charged with beating her 11-year old son, was placed on $75,000 bail by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday after she pleaded guilty to inflicting the lashes with a piece of wood.

The child was beaten after he failed to obey a call from his mother to come indoors while he was playing cricket with his friends.

The 36-year old mother is alleged to have taken him bodily into the house where she took off his pants and  beat him with a piece of wood.

The child was subsequently taken into custody by the Child Care Services of the Human Services Ministry after welfare officers noted that he was not attending school regularly and was in the habit of gambling.

The 11-year old was said to be out of control and the mother could not deal with him.  She often expressed her frustration by beating him.

The matter next comes up on June 25 when a probation officer’s  report will be submitted  and the mother of four will be sentenced.
