City closes shabby Concert Hall

The Mayor and City Council is advising the public that its Concert Hall is closed to all public events and activities because of the state of the building.

According to a press release yesterday from the council, the decision was made at the last statutory meting on May 24 after concerns were raised about the physical condition of the building by councillors. However, a “Restoration Fund” will be launched shortly to effect urgent repair works and to restore the building to its pristine state.

It is expected that the fund will be launched in August and will seek the involvement of the public and private sector in the restoration process.  The release further stated that the City Engineer estimates that the repairs will cost about $30 million.

The current building has been in existence for over 120 years and was declared open by Lord Gormanston on July 1, 1889.
