Mining camp manager on embezzlement charge

The general manager of a mining camp was placed on $150,000 bail yesterday when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson charged with embezzling from his employer.

Raun Kansinally pleaded not guilty to embezzling $604,000 from Dennis Rampersaud at Sand Pit Backdam, Madhia between April 28 and May 29. Attorney Gary Ramlochan appeared on behalf of Kansinally and denied that his client embezzled the said amount. Rather, he said he used the money to buy much needed fuel and ration for the mining camp. The attorney said that the camp was left without supplies for a couple of weeks and his client had no choice but to use the money.

Police Prosecutor Inspector Stephen Telford said that Kansinally as the camp’s manger had possession of 18ozs 8pwt gold, which was the camp’s production. The value of the gold amounted to $1.78M.  However, he allegedly converted the said amount to his own use and benefit.

Kansinally was subsequently granted bail and the matter was put down for July 4.
