Two inmates injured in prison brawl

Two inmates of the New Amsterdam Prison who were attacked by another prisoner received injuries on Friday and the police were summoned to quell the situation.

The prisoners, Jewan Pertab, 44, and Sunjit Ramoutar, 30, both of Port Mourant had to seek treatment at the New Amsterdam Hospital.

Stabroek News understands that another prisoner, Vibert Moore, 36, of Hampshire Squatting Area continually attacked the two men with various implements.

Reports are that the men belonged to two separate gangs which created havoc in East and West Berbice and are in imprisoned for armed robberies.

Moore is on remand also on a charge of escaping from lawful custody. He had reportedly shot himself in the leg during a foiled robbery a few years ago.

He was in hiding at the time and police arrested him as he was being transported in a car, during a roadblock at the Albion Police Station.

The other two men had reportedly been part of a gang whose members posed as fishermen and pounced on unsuspecting persons.
