NA prisoner admits to drug possession

A New Amsterdam prisoner admitted to being in possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking when he appeared at the NA Court on Friday.

Ray Anthony, 24, of  Angoy’s Avenue who allegedly had marijuana in his possession on May 26, said that a prison officer gave it to him.

Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo then entered a not guilty plea, citing the offence and the man’s accusations as serious. She also called for a further probe into activities at the prison.

Anthony said that the prison officer gave him the parcel with the drug and asked him to deliver the drug to another prisoner.

He said that at the time he did not know what the parcel contained.

He explained that a fun day was being held at the prison on the same day and while he was out in the yard doing his chores the officer (name given) called him and gave the substance to him. He was about to deliver the parcel when another officer stopped him and conducted a search.

Police Prosecutor, Inspector Satrohan Dayaram submitted that around 3:30 pm a prison official was in the process of doing routine checks when the prisoner was seen acting in a suspicious manner.

He was searched and the officer then discovered the parcel with the  leaves, seeds and stem of the prohibited plant.

He was detained and the police were summoned. He is scheduled to return to court on July 16. Anthony had been incarcerated for being in possession of smoking utensils.
