St Cuthbert’s oldest resident gets hamper from President

Ninety-year-old Olga Jacobs, the oldest resident in St Cuthbert’s Mission on Tuesday received a hamper President Bharrat Jagdeo had promised her on an earlier visit.

Minister of Amerindian Affairs Pauline Sukhai delivered the hamper to ‘Aunty Olga’ as she is fondly known in the community. Sukhai said it was a pleasure to make the presentation on the President’s behalf.

The elderly woman engaged the President during a May 20 outreach exercise. She presented him with a hand-made mosquito brush which she crafted. The mother of 10 has lived in St Cuthbert’s Mission all her life. Despite her age she continues to cultivate a kitchen garden and moves about the village independently. According to GINA, the gift costs about $40,000 and consists mainly of food items and other necessities.

Maudline Jacobs, one of the woman’s daughters said she appreciated the President’s kind gesture.
