Test cricket should take precedence over World Cup football

Dear Editor,

It is unbelievable that NCN will give World Cup football precedence over Test cricket – the national sport where Guyana’s leading sportsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul will be in action?  Agreed, the World Cup finals are not staged every day, therefore NCN needs to apply some common sense in allotting its live coverage time when the two events clash. Big matches involving football heavyweights like Brazil playing Argentina, or against Germany or Italy or England could be excused for getting priority over the Tests. Or even the opening ceremony. But not run-of-the mill games like North Korea v Greece or Algeria v Slovenia or Serbia v Australia. NCN would do well to improve its already tainted image by appeasing the majority of Guyana’s sports fans and give cricket its deserving precedence even when it is World Cup football time. Or rather, establish another channel like most of the West Indian TV systems and WRHM have done, to show two important events simultaneously.

Yours faithfully,
Jack Palmer
