A man who carjacked a vehicle and robbed the driver of his possessions in the process was remanded to prison yesterday by acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.

Cheddie Bacchus

Cheddie Bacchus was brought to the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court following his discharge from the hospital and he had to be lifted into the courtroom since he was still recovering from a gunshot wound to his foot. It is alleged that on April 4, he robbed Olden Mc Kurdy of a motor car valued at $1.5M, the property of Dale Mendonca. Further, on April 4, he robbed him of $20,500 cash and one cellular phone valued $10,000, being the property of Mc Kurdy.

He pleaded not guilty to both charges and was represented by attorney Frank Fraser. In his application for bail, Fraser said that both offences were bailable and that his client needs to be out of prison to access medical treatment for his injury.

Meanwhile, Mc Kurdy said that on the day in question he went to his cousin’s salon and when he was about to go into his car, he heard someone say “don’t move.”  He added that he felt something against his back but is unsure of the instrument. He said that the defendant relieved him of his possessions took away his keys and drove away with the vehicle.

Police Prosecutor Inspec-tor Stephen Telford said that Bacchus led police on a “wild goose chase” around the area before ending up in a burial ground. Further, the prosecutor said the Bacchus has similar matters in Court 5.

While he was granted bail on those matters, he was not attending court and allegedly ended up committing more robberies.

He asked for bail to be refused and said that the state has a number of ambulances that can take Bacchus to the hospital when so required. Telford’s application was granted and the matter put down for June 23 in Court 2.
