Kurtzious re-elected as women lawyers’ president

Incumbent President of the Guyana Association of Women Lawyers Sandra Kurtzious was re-elected unanimously when the body held its Annual General Meeting recently.

According to a press release from the group, other office bearers elected for the new fiscal year 2010-2011 were Emily Dodson (Vice President), Sadie Amin (Secretary), Dhanwanti Sukhdeo (Treasurer), Kim Kyte-John (Assistant Secretary/Treasurer) and Sandra Bart, Jamela Ali, Faye Barker and Romona Rookhum, who will serve as committee members. Kurtzious is quoted as saying that she hopes to continue the Association’s ongoing work in order to effect significant change. She thanked members for their vote of confidence and committed the Association to organising a conference for lawyers and to facilitating seminars to educate them in various areas.

At the May 28 meeting at the Hotel Tower, Kurtzious reported on activities for 2009-2010, such as consulting with and attending Select Parliamentary Committees on various pieces of legislation, including the recently enacted Sexual Offences Act. The Association also collaborated with the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security on women’s issues, prison visits and partnered with other NGOs. It also made a monetary donation to Haiti earthquake victims and hosted its Annual Dinner and Dance and a Karaoke session to raise funds.
