GBTI Open Tennis Tournament

Number one seeded player Philip Squires has fought his way up to the semi-finals after dishing out his second ‘double bagel’ in his match-up against Gavin Barckoy  on Wednesday night in his second men’s singles match of the Guyana Bank of Trade and Industry (GBTI) Open Tennis Tournament at the GBTI Sports Club, Bel Air Park.

A contented Squires, after his effortless 6 – 0, 6 – 0 win against Barckoy, said he is looking to make this tournament a flawless one and wants to maintain his trend and he is predicting a similar outcome against his next opponent, Berbician Mario Niamatali.

‘I’m trying to win the tournament without dropping a game in the singles match. I already won my first two matches 6 – love, 6 – love, so I’m looking to take it all the way, I’m going to win the men’s singles category flawlessly,” Squires stated.

Squires had only attained his first ‘double bagel’ against Gairy Myers the previous Tuesday night in his first match of the tournament.

In another effortless men’s singles win Jeremy Miller plastered Sandeep Chand for a 6 – 2, 6 – 0 win. Chand was able to start off the first set with a 2 – 0 game lead but it was downhill from there after Miller unleashed some massive backhand strokes.

Chand found Miller’s strokes hard to handle and his frustrated replies led to easy points for Miller, whose forehand moves in the second set proved even more challenging as it guided him to his love set.

In the sole doubles match of the night it was youth over experience as number one seeded junior Gavin Lewis teamed up with number two seeded junior Daniel Lopes to overpower seniors Albert Madramootoo and Steve David Longe with a 6 – 4, 6 – 2 win.

The tournament continued last night with a single match-up in the men’s singles category where Leyland Leacock defeated Gavin Lewis 6 – 2 5 – 7, 6 – 3.
