West Berbice man fined $30,000 for beating wife

Jaikarran Sahadeo, 45, called ‘Karo’ of Armadale, West Coast Berbice, was yesterday fined $30,000 or an alternative of six months imprisonment after he admitted to beating his wife.

He appeared at the Fort Wellington Court to answer the charge of assaulting his wife, Sharda Rohoman so as to cause her actual bodily harm and he was fined by Magistrate Nigel Hawke after admitting to the crime.

In his explanation, Sahadeo told the magistrate that they had an argument and he slapped her. “But me din expect the slap woulda catch she so hard,“ he said. The magistrate told him he had no right to beat her in the first place.

Rohoman told the magistrate that he caused injuries to her ears as a result of the assault. She said she begged him to stop but he continued to hit her in the head. Further, she said that the incident was not the first time she suffered abuse at her husband’s hands. She said Sahadeo would hit her whenever he drank alcohol.

Magistrate Hawke also placed Sahadeo on a bond to keep the peace for 12 months.
