The newly renovated Mabaruma Regional Hospital delivered its first set of twins on Wednesday.

The twins, a boy and girl, were born to Hosororo, North West District resident Joan La Cruz. They were delivered by Dr Maya Layne, the new doctor assigned to Matthews Ridge who is currently at     the Mabaruma Regional Hos-pital, Region One. The newborns are set to be in perfect health. They also have an older sibling.

CEO of the hospital Seonand Mossai in a recent interview with the Govern-ment Information Agency (GINA) said the hospital is fully equipped with surgical theatre, laboratory, baby incubator and other necessities. It boasts a staff complement of 62, including two medics and a resident doctor.

Mossai disclosed that a full-time pharmacist and two additional doctors (a gynaecologist and a physician) are expected to join the team by September.

Since its rehabilitation, the hospital has been providing a range of services including maternal child health, tuberculosis and malaria clinics.

It is also equipped to perform major surgeries, but is awaiting the deployment of expertise.

Mossai said there has been an influx of patients since the facility is the only one of its kind in the region.

Also, two nurses’ hostels are being built at Mabaruma and Port Kaituma at a cost of $15 million.
