Man on wounding charge after drinking kari

A man who allegedly wounded another after imbibing a local drink was remanded to prison when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday charged with felonious wounding.

Colin Alexander was not required to plead to the charge which alleges that on June 11 in the North Rupununi, Region Nine, he unlawfully wounded James Rodney with intent to maim, disfigure, disable or cause him actual bodily harm.

Alexander, 38, a farmer, said that Rodney visited his home and they began drinking kari (an Amerindian traditional drink). After some time, he said that they left to go to the farm.  He added that while there Rodney attacked him with a knife and stabbed him in his head. In retaliation, he said, he stabbed Rodney.

Alexander was then remanded and the matter transferred to Lethem Magistrate’s Court for September 7.
