Region Three hosting remedial classes for primary school students

The Region Three Department of Education is hosting remedial classes for grades two, three and four pupils at 33 centres across the region.

In a press release Regional Literacy Coordinator Seenarine Bhukhan said the programme caters for students who have fallen below the expected standard in reading and numeracy. He said 589 Grade Two, 554 Grade Three and 600 Grade four students are expected to benefit from the four-week programme.

About 116 teachers are expected to lend their expertise to this effort. Fifteen students will be assigned to each teacher. Selected teachers were expected to participate in a one-day workshop at the Malgre Tout Primary School yesterday and another at the Greenwich Park Primary School on Friday. The objective of the workshop is to introduce teachers to the content and methodology to be used during the programme. Personnel for the workshops were drawn from the National Literacy Unit and the Regional Department of Education.

Each teacher will receive a stipend of $30,000 for the month-long session. Students will also receive a mid-morning snack. The sessions start July 12. Classes will be held from 9 am to 12 pm from Monday to Thursday.
