Lethem residents fed up with electricity situation

Dear Editor,

Almost all the residents of Lethem are now angry and fed up with the electricity situation here.

When the Moco Moco Hydro Plant was shut down some years ago, we reverted to a small Lethem Power Company generator and understood and accepted the inconveniences of a six-hour outage every night.

Not too long ago a bigger generator was installed, with the promise of continuous electricity.

However, what we have been getting in the past two weeks is power outages of at least eight hours every single day, sometimes for as long as fourteen hours.

These continuous blackouts must surely affect the school hot meals programme, where the storage of meat and water must be a problem.

With the construction of an Industrial Site in progress, and with two banks scheduled to be built soon, where will the power for all these new businesses come from? What is the Rupununi Chamber of Commerce saying about all of this?

Too many voices are silent now because their allegiances stifle them from telling things as they are. These are times when we have to forget this way of thinking, and focus on the common good of our fellow man.

Our political officials, be they government or otherwise, should be reminded of Sir Jock Campbell’s words, “People are more important than ships and shops and sugar estates.”

Yours faithfully,
Gloria Lye
