Trawler explosion victim ‘coming around slowly’

More than two weeks after a trawler explosion left him with burns over ninety percent of his body, 19-year-old Orlon Munroe is said to be “coming around slowly” as he recuperates in the Burn Care Unit of the Georgetown Hospital.

Munroe’s mother said yesterday that he was talking and “he eat a lot”. His recovery is slow she pointed out but she is hopeful that her son was going to pull through.

On June 19, a fishing trawler belonging to Pritipaul Singh Investment exploded off the Waini coast. The vessel was badly damaged. The captain, Delbert Williams is still missing.

Injured along with Munroe meanwhile were Leslie Adams, 22, of Virginia Village, Cane Grove, Mahaica; George Fitzpatrick, 40 of West Ruimveldt and Elvis Todd, who escaped with minor injuries. They were rescued by another vessel dozens of miles off the North West coast and were later transferred to another vessel owned by the company they work for before arriving in Georgetown.

Other relatives had stated that the vessel in question had been “a trouble vessel”, since according to them their injured relative related that after the crew departed the McDoom, East Bank Demerara base of the company they were forced to return after the vessel broke down. They said that the injured Fitzpatrick related that he and the captain along with Munroe were “fixing a belt” in the engine room when there was a loud explosion.
