Dear Editor,
Despite there being laws that govern our country Guyana; I note some of the things which occur in our native land and I am urged to ask if we are a careless negligent, irresponsible and an indisciplined nation?
For example, youths have been shocked to death after having held electrified fences and leaning power poles have toppled despite warnings. Occupants of derelict buildings continue to remain therein, after having been given notice to evacuate. Eventually those buildings have crumbled and occupants injured. Many families have been left homeless; others have perished in the flames of fire which have been caused by negligence.
Rampaging cows on our roadways have caused vehicular collisions which have resulted in casual or even fatal accidents. Some facilities cannot be used properly or conveniently due to shoddy workmanship by contractors.
The noise nuisance is a continual problem and the disposal of strewn garbage in the capital city seems to be unmanageable. How do we feel on seeing clean cities – which are not as rich as Guyana – as we are overseas?
Have we lost our national stride and our national pride? The above mentioned occurrences have urged me to ask if we are a carless, negligent, irresponsible and an indisciplined nation.
