Central Demerara lions elect first female president

The Lions Club of Central Demerara has elected Sharon Letlow its first female president in its 42-year history.

In a press release the Club said Letlow and other executive members were installed at a special ceremony at the club’s New Providence, East Bank Demerara Den.

Vice Governor Surujpaul Singh delivered the charge to the 2010-2011 board of directors. Letlow will be incorporating the theme ‘Empowering communities through service’ during her tenure. She said, “The services we give to the communities must be sustainable. More emphasis must be placed on our youth. We need to teach them life skills which they will take with them through adulthood,” in her address. Letlow also said there is need for the growth in quality membership and plans to work towards fostering stronger fellowship among members.

The release said the other executives installed are Desmond Woon, first vice president; Pauline Massay, second vice president; Wellesley Davis, secretary; Dwarka Singh, treasurer; Oswald Thierens, tamer and Cecil Persaud, twister. Chetram Singh is the membership director while the first year directors are Surujpaul Singh, Annand Surujpaul, Ishmael Bacchus and Hansel Barrow.

The second year directors are Dennis Wilson, Lionel Chinian, Ivor English and Rupert Hopkinson. The immediate past president is  John Marshall.
