Jack taking floods to Caricom

(Trinidad Express) Works and Transport Minister Jack Warner says he intends to take the issue of flooding and the environment to Caricom.

Warner said that the statistics on the annual rainfall in this country and the average temperatures over the years made it clear that we are faced with the greater issue of global warming, increased rainfall and temperatures.

In a release to the press, Warner said the increasing threat to our environment perpetuated by our random care and concern with how we treat with waste and how we fail to control the side-effects of our industrial progress has hit us as a global nation.

“It is in these circumstances that I intend to present a note to Cabinet on the need for a national campaign on the issue of the environment; how to preserve and conserve.

I also intend with the leave of Cabinet and through the Prime Minister to also lay a paper before Caricom on the issue of the environment” he said.

“With Caricom’s approval I also intend to make approaches to international bodies and leaders on this issue of international global warming, flooding and the environment.

Already Bharrat Jagdeo, President of Guyana has championed in no small measure this cause. I intend to now partner with him in making this an international issue of concern” Warner added.

He said Caricom and Trinidad and Tobago must move now in a new direction to show concern on this issue.

In the coming weeks, he said, technocrats from the Ministry would be directed to compile all the research that we need to go before the Cabinet and Caricom.

“I am prepared to direct all human resource available to ensure international debate on this issue is revitalised. Our people deserve no less” said Warner.

He said the unprecedented flooding in the country in recent time has encouraged national debate into the causes of this natural phenomenon.
