Husband arrested over death of Canje woman

Investigations have led to police arresting the husband of a Canje woman days after she was discovered dead in their home with what relatives believe are marks of violence about her body.

Patricia Beepat

Early Tuesday morning Patricia Beepat, called Patsy, of Canefield Settlement, East Canje was discovered early Tuesday morning in the bottom flat of her home which she shared with her husband.

Her lifeless body was in a chair and relatives are insisting that the woman succumbed to injuries inflicted by her husband of about 20 years.

Chandi Persaud Beepat, 52, has since denied allegations that he physically harmed his wife.

The man, who works at the Rose Hall Sugar Estate, said he returned home on Monday evening and observed Patricia lying in a chair apparently asleep. Her eyes, he told Stabroek News (SN), were half opened. Patricia, he said, he’d learnt from a shop operator, had taken home a bottle of rum with her that afternoon.

At about 5 am on Tuesday when Chandi again saw the woman he said that this time she was motionless in the chair.

Chandi, speaking with SN, insisted that he’d only hit his wife once and did not do so on Monday. Patricia, the man claimed, would drink rum as well and often fell and hit herself.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted on Patricia’s body this morning at the New Amsterdam hospital. Relatives are hoping that the results will support their belief that the woman was murdered.
