Trishwari Ramdhary, 22, who was stabbed on Sunday, remained in a critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) yesterday while her attacker remained on the run.

Ramdhary, a mother of two of Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara, was stabbed at least seven times about the body by the father of her two children during an argument on Sunday at Enterprise. Ramdhary sustained stab wounds to her chest, sides and shoulder. She moved to Enterprise only the day before the attack to live with someone she met recently.

The woman’s mother told Stabroek News yesterday that her daughter has shown signs of improvement but she noted that the injured woman’s condition was still serious as wounds to her torso were severe. She said her daughter regained consciousness on Sunday evening, following an operation performed on her vital organs. She was yesterday transferred from the Intensive Care Unit of the GPH to the High Dependency Unit (HDU), where medical staff continued to monitor her condition.

The woman’s mother said that her daughter suffered greatly at the hands of her husband, whom she separated from two years ago. She said the woman was physically abused by her husband.

After the two separated, Ramdhary moved in with her sister who assisted her in taking care of her two children, a boy, six, and a girl, seven. Relatives believe that it was after she started seeing someone recently, her husband became annoyed.

They said the police should have arrested the suspect’s mother and a sibling as the trio also went to the Enterprise location. Her new partner’s father, said  Ramlall said that the man’s intention was to “kill she but she lucky she still alive.”

Ramlall told Stabroek News on Sunday that Ramdhary went out to the yard, willingly to speak to the man and the two began arguing over who should keep their children. He said he was sitting in his house when, a few minutes later, he heard the young woman screaming for help.

Ramlall said when he ventured out to see what was causing the commotion, he saw the suspect plunging a “long knife” into the woman’s body.

He said that the man, after stabbing the young mother, picked up a bicycle and rode out of the village as residents gathered and pursued him. He escaped in the nearby cane fields.

The woman was rushed to the hospital in an unconscious state while another relative reported the matter to the Vigilance Police Station.

Meanwhile, this newspaper understands that the suspect’s relatives approached police on the West Coast of Demerara accompanied by a lawyer. They reported that the suspect could not be located yesterday.
