Lottery company paid out $8B in prizes over 14 years

The Guyana Lottery Company Limited (GLCL) says it has paid out more than $8B in prize money over its 14 years of operation.

The company, which celebrated the milestone on Sunday, said some $4.3B was paid out to Lotto winners; another $2.1B to Scratch winners; and over $1.3B to lucky players of the Daily Millions game. The prize money for Play de Dream and 3D totalled some $338M.

The GLCL, which is owned by Canadian Bank Note, says it contributes 24% of its monthly sales to government with the funds going towards social causes and projects.  Some of these include rehabilitation works at the National Cultural Centre, Amerindian Heritage Month activities and the now shelved Durban Park Development Project.

Some $40M was spent on the last project to clear the land and sand fill it. The area has since been reclaimed by vegetation and has become a dumpsite for some.
